PRESS RELEASE
THE Scottish Wholesale Association (SWA) has confirmed the appointment of George Benson, commercial director of Edinburgh-based Bellevue, as vice-president.
Iain Hill, president of the high-profile association, confirmed this key appointment which George Benson takes up with immediate effect. He was unanimously elected to the role at the recent SWA Council meeting.
"This is an important appointment for the SWA and I am absolutely delighted that George has agreed to accept it," said Hill. "George’s vast experience of the industry – and his enthusiasm – will bring fresh ideas and increased drive to the Association and I look forward to working with him in the coming months.
"As a long-time supporter and active Council member of the SWA with responsibilities including recruitment and non-licensed trade activity, George is a real asset to the Association and ideally placed to embrace the challenges facing our industry over the next couple of years.
"He will be an articulate and effective figurehead for the SWA as we continue to lobby government on key issues affecting the wholesale industry, develop relevant training programmes and help our members’ businesses become more profitable."
Bellevue, which operates cash and carries in Edinburgh and Stirling, positions itself as a "one-stop-shop" for retailers and caterers. Its Premier Club customer loyalty scheme for retailers has been running for over 15 years now while its Drinks Direct division has become established as the leading wines and spirits delivered service for the on-trade in Edinburgh and the Lothians.
In 2009, Bellevue is celebrating its 40th anniversary with a year-long programme of promotional activity and special deals for all customers.
"It is a huge honour to be elected vice-president of the SWA," said Benson. "While it is a role that will bring with it tremendous responsibility and challenges, I am fortunate that I will have the support and back-up of Iain Hill and the other members of Council, all of whom are extremely committed and experienced.
"As a Council member, I have found my involvement with the Association very rewarding and I look forward to assuming the position of president when Iain steps down after his two-year term at our 2010 annual conference.
"It is also reassuring to know that the day-to-day running of the Association is in the very capable hands of our executive director Kate Salmon, who continues to work tirelessly behind the scenes on behalf of our members.
"With the changes to Scotland’s licensing laws and the raft of ongoing legislative and legal compliance issues that directly affect our businesses and staff, we need a strong SWA to ensure that our voice is heard."
