Tackling Scope 3 Emissions in Food and Drink Wholesale

Food and drink companies, including wholesalers, are increasingly expected to take responsibility for their value chain carbon emissions – indirect emissions that occur in the upstream and downstream activities of a company. Also known as Scope 3 emissions, they make up around 96% of Scottish wholesalers’ total carbon footprint.

For food and drink wholesalers, these emissions are typically ingredients in products purchased and then distributed, including emissions from deforestation risk commodities such as palm oil, cocoa, and soy.

Waste is also a key source of Scope 3 emissions. Business travel, commuting, services purchased, and investments are other examples.

Understanding your Scope 3 footprint can provide valuable insights and identify opportunities for cost savings, and collaborations with others in the value chain, such as  suppliers and customers, to drive climate action.

Take action to reduce food waste

  • Waste reduction, including action on food waste, reduces costs and helps tackle Scope 3 emissions.

Commit to deforestation free sourcing

  • Committing to sourcing certified deforestation free products, for example certified sustainable palm oil, is one way that wholesalers can reduce their value chain emissions.
  • It’s estimated that commercial agriculture accounts for almost three-quarters of the destruction of tropical rainforests. This has huge impacts on people and wildlife and also on carbon storage, as cutting down trees alters carbon storage and releases CO2 into the atmosphere.

Engage with your supply chain

  • Scottish Wholesale Association, with support from the Scotland Food & Drink Partnership Net Zero Commitment, offers help to members with engaging suppliers on reducing Scope 3 emissions. Contact the SWA team for more information: info@scottishwholesale.co.uk
