Reducing Electricity Emissions in Wholesale Operations

Electricity accounts for around 18% of wholesale operational emissions. To reduce electricity emissions, the wholesale sector can play a key role in the expansion of solar power on warehouse roofs, and by purchasing renewable energy.

Switch to a renewable electricity supply

  • Purchasing renewable electricity can play a key role in reducing carbon emissions.
  • The most direct way of doing this is through Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs). These are agreements directly with the supplier of renewable energy.
  • Multi-buyer or aggregated PPA can help to spread costs and negotiation among multiple buyers.

Generate your own renewable energy onsite

  • Wholesale warehouses offer a unique opportunity for solar power installation, with their accessible roof space.
  • It is estimated that, on average, up to 20% of current on-site power demand could be met through solar PV.
  • The financial case for installing on-site renewable energy is expected to increase as electrification of transport fleets and heating is stepped up.
